Two quotes for the same patio can be worlds apart, and the customer sees nothing but two numbers. What he does not see is the difference underneath: one business strips the topsoil, forms and compacts the subgrade, places a frost protection layer, sets an edge restraint in concrete and sets out the falls. The other spreads a few centimetres of sand on the existing ground and lays stones on top. On handover day both surfaces look the same. After the second winter they do not. This is exactly where a business either defends its quote or slides into a price comparison it does not want to win. This article works through the build-up layer by layer — sub-base, frost protection, falls, drainage and edge restraint — and then shows how to explain it to a customer who has neither the time nor the appetite for a lecture. What the Customer Sees and What He Pays For
Depending on the format, a paving stone is six to eight centimetres thick. Beneath it, depending on use, lie twenty to fifty centimetres of material nobody will ever see again. The customer still judges the work by the visible surface: colour, format, bond, clean cuts along the house wall. The entire rest of the job is, for him, a claim on a piece of paper. And claims get compared by price. That is not ill will, it is the normal reaction to work that cannot be seen.
Every paving contractor therefore faces the same problem as a roofer with the underlay membrane or an electrician with equipotential bonding: the part of the work that decides service life is invisible. Anyone who does not make it visible automatically competes with people who simply leave it out. The price difference does not come from the stone, because everybody buys stone on similar terms. It comes from excavation, disposal, sub-base material, compaction and time.
So the task is not to convince the customer that your stones are better. The task is to show him the layers under the stone before he puts three quotes side by side. That works at the garden table, it works in the quote, and it works on the website — ideally in all three places with the same words, so that the customer recognises during his comparison what you were talking about.
One sentence that works at the garden table
The Build-Up in Section: Five Layers
Paving in an unbound construction is a layered system in which every course has its own job. The technical basis is set out in DIN 18318, the German standard for paved surfaces and slab coverings in unbound construction including edgings, and in the rules of road and path construction. For a customer conversation it is enough to name the layers once from the bottom up and give each of them a purpose in one sentence.
At the bottom sits the formation level: the subgrade, trimmed to profile and compacted. It is the basis for everything above it, and it is where you find out whether the ground actually carries. Above it comes the frost protection layer of well-graded, permeable material, then the base course that spreads the loads, then the thin laying course into which the stone is set, and finally the paving itself with its filled joints. The joint is not a gap but a structural element: through it, each stone passes its load on to its neighbours.
Formation and subgrade
Trimmed to profile and compacted. If the ground does not carry, no layer above it helps. Soft or variable ground has to be known before the quote is written.
Frost protection layer
Permeable, frost-resistant material. It stops water from accumulating and the ground from moving in winter. Its depth follows from the use and from the frost exposure zone.
Base course
Placed and compacted in layers. It spreads point loads from vehicles over a larger area so that the surface does not develop ruts.
Laying course
A thin course of grit or crushed sand, 3 to 5 centimetres when compacted (DIN 18318). It absorbs tolerances but is not a levelling layer for a badly built sub-base.
Paving and joints
The visible part. Joint width and joint material are part of the structure, not cosmetics: without a filled joint there is no load transfer between the stones.
Edge restraint
Kerb, palisade or lawn edging set in concrete with a haunch. It holds the bond together at the sides and is the reason a surface does not creep outwards.
If you name these six terms once during the first conversation and add half a sentence to each, the customer has a structure in his head on which he can later hang your quote. He does not become an expert, but he knows that there are layers and that they cost money. For the purchase decision, nothing more is needed.
Frost Protection: The Layer Nobody Sees
Water that freezes in the ground expands and lifts everything above it. When it thaws, the surface settles back, but not evenly. The result is waves, steps and edges people trip over. The frost protection layer works against exactly that process: it is made of material that lets water through instead of holding it, and it sits deep enough to move the frost-sensitive layers out of the critical zone.
How deep that has to be depends on two things: on the load and on the region. For the standardisation of pavement structures in road construction, Germany is divided into three frost exposure zones (RStO 12), and the required depth of the frost-resistant build-up rises with the zone and the traffic class. In public road construction those figures reach an order of magnitude nobody would apply to a private patio. But the logic stays the same, and it explains why a car driveway costs more than a seating area with the same stones and the same area.
This is where the most common conflict in quote comparisons arises. A competing quote with half the build-up is not miscalculated, it is a different construction. The sub-base is the actual work, and whoever reduces it is selling a different product. That can be said factually without disparaging anyone: you describe what you install and leave the comparison to the customer.

This comparison is not a sales trick but the most honest way to explain a price difference. It also contains the concession that the cheaper job looks the same on handover day. Customers notice when someone names the weak spot in his own argument. It raises the credibility of everything else.
Falls and Drainage: Two Centimetres per Metre
A paved surface is never level. It has a fall so that rainwater runs off instead of standing in puddles or pressing against the house wall. The technical rules for paved surfaces name cross falls of 2.5 percent as the standard case (ZTV Pflaster-StB). On patios and house entrances, 2 percent is often used, that is two centimetres of height difference per metre of length (project experience). That is little enough for furniture to stay put and enough for water to drain reliably.
The sentence "two centimetres per metre" is the best explanation this topic has, because the customer can measure it himself. On a patio five metres deep it means ten centimetres of height difference between the house and the outer edge. Say that in advance and show where the surface will sit lower, and there is no discussion afterwards. Leave it unsaid and you get the question why the patio is "crooked".
The second half of the topic is where the water goes once it has left the surface. Under German water law, rainwater should be infiltrated, seeped away or discharged close to where it falls, as far as that is possible without harming the common good (Section 55 WHG). Whether that happens through a soakaway, a channel, a connection or a permeable construction depends on the soil, on the property and on local requirements. This question belongs before the signature, not after the first heavy rain. Edge Restraint: The Frame That Holds It Together
Paving in unbound construction works like an arch laid flat: every stone braces against its neighbour, and the load travels outwards through the filled joints. At the edge that force has to be caught. If there is no solid restraint there, the outer stones creep outwards with every load, the joints open, jointing material trickles away and the bond dissolves from the outside in. You can see it on many driveways after only a few years.
The edge restraint is therefore not an optional design element but a structural part. It is normally set in a concrete bed with a haunch so that it really does take the forces. In the quote that means linear metres, concrete, excavation for the foundation and time — line items a customer reads as trimmings unless they are explained. With an explanation he reads them as the reason the surface will still look like this in ten years.
The comparison everyone understands
How to Explain It Without Losing the Customer
The most common mistake in a first conversation is completeness. Anyone who works through all five layers with grading sizes, compaction values and standard numbers loses the customer after roughly ninety seconds — not because the subject is dull, but because he does not know what to do with the information. He does not want to run the site. He wants to know what he is paying for and how he will notice that it was done well.
The reverse order works better: first the consequence, then the cause, then the line item in the quote. So not "we install 25 centimetres of frost protection", but "the surface should still be level in ten years, which is why a layer goes under the stones that holds no water, and it appears as a separate item in the quote". The technical term may be used, but it comes last rather than first.
For the site visit a fixed sequence has proven useful. It takes about five minutes and still touches everything that matters. It can be walked through on the plot, on the measured area, and it ends at the point where the customer asks about the price himself.
Settle the use
Will the surface be walked on, driven on, or will a vehicle stand there regularly? The whole build-up follows from that. Asking this first shows that you do not work from a square-metre price.
Raise the ground question
What lies underneath, what happened there in the past, are there fills or services? Say openly that the ground can only be judged reliably once it is opened, and what that means for the quote.
Show the water
Walk the area with the customer and show where the water will run. Two centimetres per metre, away from the house. That is the moment falls stop being abstract.
The build-up in one sentence
Excavation, frost protection, base course, laying course, stone, joint, edging. List it once, three words of explanation each, no more. The customer does not have to remember it, he has to have heard it.
Point to the quote
Announce that exactly these points will appear as separate items in the quote. The document then repeats the conversation instead of introducing new information.
What of This Belongs on the Website
The first conversation often happens only after the customer has already formed an opinion. Before that he searched, opened three sites and decided whom to call. If your paving service page consists of a list of stone formats, he has no reason to prefer you to anyone else. If the build-up is explained there, he has one — and he arrives at the conversation with different prior knowledge.
The page does not need technical essays for that. It needs a sectional drawing with five labels, three or four paragraphs in the same language you use at the garden table, and pictures from the construction phase. Construction photos are exactly where most businesses leave material unused: the excavation, the finished formation, the placed frost protection layer and the set edging are the pictures that explain the price. In the portfolio gallery a paving project should therefore be more than one picture of the finished surface. Two shots from the construction phase, a note on the area, a note on the intended use — that is enough for a prospect to recognise his own situation. And the enquiry form ideally asks for exactly what you need for a first assessment: area, intended use, access for machines and material, known ground conditions and the preferred period.

Line Items the Customer Recognises
A quote consisting of a single line — "paving work, patio, 40 square metres, lump sum" — throws away all the explanation done during the site visit. It invites comparison with every other one-line calculation, and it makes variations difficult, because nothing states what was included. A schedule of items costs more time to write but shortens the discussion afterwards considerably.
The order matters: items should follow the sequence of work, not be sorted by size of price. The customer then reads the quote like a programme of works and understands that each line stands for a working day or a delivery of material. Quantities belong in there too, in units he can check: square metres, linear metres, cubic metres, tonnes.

Ground Conditions, Variations and the Awkward Cases
Excavation regularly turns up something the quote could not have contained: an old concrete slab, a filled area with rubble, an undocumented service line, ground that stops carrying once it is wet. That is not a calculation error but the nature of the job — the subgrade can only be judged to a limited extent before it is opened. What matters is how the business reacts at that moment.
The only route that ends without a dispute is approval before execution: stop work, photograph, quantify effort and cost, offer it in writing, wait for approval, then carry on. For construction contracts, German law provides a defined procedure for changes to the agreed scope, with a right to order changes and an adjustment of remuneration (Section 650b BGB); where the contract is based on VOB/B, its own rules on changed or additional work apply. How that plays out in a specific case belongs to legal review; for site practice what counts is that nothing is carried out without documented consent.
Anyone who explained the build-up beforehand has a far easier time here. A customer who knows that several layers lie under his patio, and that the lowest one depends on the ground, understands a variation for ground replacement as a continuation of the conversation. A customer who only bought "stones being laid" experiences the same variation as an extra demand. The difference lies not in the variation but in what was said weeks earlier.
A variation is an invoice for something that was never discussed. What was discussed beforehand is a line item.
Technically the same holds as commercially: the sub-base decides service life, and the conversation before the excavation decides the working relationship. Both are invisible once the surface is finished, and both are the reason a quote may sit above the competition. It only becomes visible if a business makes it visible — in the conversation, in the schedule of items and on its own website.
