abrasive (gritting material)

In short and in plain language

Abrasive is the word for grit materials such as small stones or sand.

They make icy paths less slippery. The ice does not melt.

Some towns allow only these on pavements. In spring they are swept up again.

Definition
Abrasive gritting materials such as grit, sand or granules make slippery surfaces less slippery without melting the ice. Some municipalities require them on pavements and allow road salt only in exceptional cases. They are usually removed again after the winter.
