dormancy

In short and in plain language

Dormancy is the time when trees and shrubs rest.

They hardly grow then, and many have no leaves. In our climate this is mainly in winter.

Fruit trees are often pruned in this time. New trees are also planted then.

Definition
Dormancy is the time of year in which woody plants hardly grow and deciduous plants carry no leaves. In Central Europe this is mainly winter. Fruit trees are often pruned and trees planted during this time. When it starts and ends depends on the weather and the type of plant.
