water shoot

In short and in plain language

A water shoot is a shoot that grows straight up.

It often appears after a tree has been cut back too hard.

It usually bears no fruit. So it is often removed in summer.

Definition
A water shoot is a vigorous shoot that grows steeply upwards from branches or the trunk, often after hard pruning. Water shoots usually bear no fruit and disturb the structure of the crown. On fruit trees they are therefore often removed in summer.
